The Day After November 3rd, 2020

election2020

Full Disclosure: I'm writing this on Monday and scheduling it to post Wednesday morning. Why am I writing it before Election Day? Because I believe the sentiments in this post are true regardless of pending or final results. I believe this to be true in times of peace or civil unrest. I believe this is true on a Wednesday in November as much as it's true on a Saturday in July.

As American citizens, allowing our voice and values to be heard through voting is one of the most important privileges and responsibilities we have. I believe a democracy for all people, by all people is dope and I'm grateful for the women who pushed their ways to the ballot box before me.

However crucial, voting is simply one of the ways we express our voices and our values. Cultivating lives which holistically manifest these qualities is equally as significant, though often unfairly overlooked or over simplified.

Yet, as human beings, we're part of something much greater than nation and party. Our purpose transcends lines drawn on a map or in the sand. It is neither bound by time nor who lives in a white house. Though it may seem insignificant in comparison to the history books written about this moment in time, our legacy, which we build through consistent words and actions, will prove strong and profound.

With every day and decision we make, we influence others and have a direct effect on the world around us. Which is why being intentional with how we spend our energy and resources, as well as creating routines which put our values on display, are an equally important privileges and responsibilities. I believe it's our divine calling to care for this world and her people. Through every single coaching call with this community, I'm more and more convinced we are naturally bent towards love and justice and community and beauty and peace. These are not policies that shift in us every 4 years, rather they're the fuel of our every day lives.

No, no, we are not that easily shaken because we know intentionality is life time work and consistency is our measure of success.

And so, beautiful friend, today and every day, we keep cultivating worthy lives.

We do this when we show up authentically, claiming whatever space we inhabit.
When we lean in and listen to someone's story, trusting their perspective is worthy.
When we bring a dinner and brownies to a friend's house on a particularly crappy day.
When we create and play and get our hands dirty.
When we admit we were wrong or misinformed, and sincerely apologize.
When we pursue a heart-dream courageously, even though we may fail.
When we invite others to join us in prayer and song and belly laughing and mourning.
When we value our bodies and cherish our abilities, and do the same for others.
When we gather around a table and let the food sustain us, as much as, the company.
When we ask "What harms am I responsible for and how can I readjust my impact?"
When we give generously, in our scarcity and abundance, because we believe there is enough.
When we recognize and embrace the mysteries which we may never full understand.
When we march forward in hope, joining hands with neighbor and stranger.
and when we wake up the next day to do it all again.

This has always been the rhythm of humanity, resounding above power's selfish din. My prayer for the coming days is that we may recognize her song and join in with love.
